Switch Mode Power Supplies (SMPS) have become a preferred alternative to traditional linear power supplies due to their compactness, efficiency (70-95%), compatibility with wide-range input voltage and environmental benefits. Unlike linear power supplies, which are bulky and inefficient, SMPS offers higher efficiency, smaller size, and the capability to handle varying input voltages with minimal heat generation, making it ideal for modern electronic applications. This paper presents the development of a 5V multiport switch mode power supply with integrated load indicator for enhanced power reliability using flyback converter topology, aimed at delivering a stable and efficient power source for critical applications in telecommunications, data centers, and consumer electronics. A key addition to this design is a load indicator feature, which provides an immediate visual signal if there is a disruption in power delivery, such as from a damaged cord or broken connection. If the load indicator does not light up (yellow LED), users can quickly identify issues related to faulty cables or connectors without complex troubleshooting, ensuring quick diagnostics and reliability in power delivery. The SMPS design eliminates the need for large, heat-generating components typical of linear power supplies, integrating overvoltage and overcurrent protection to safeguard both the SMPS and connected devices. Performance tests were conducted to evaluate the SMPS under varying input voltages and load conditions, ensuring compliance with international safety and performance standards. Results showed that the SMPS achieved a stable 5V output with peak efficiency of 85.2% under full load, while the load indicator feature effectively provided visual feedback on power supply status. The SMPS maintained smooth regulation over a broad input voltage range, demonstrating its adaptability to fluctuating power conditions, making it a practical, energy-conscious solution.
