Pada tahun 1993 saya telah memulakan di Jakarta satu peringatan ekspedisi eksplorasi pelopor utama Belanda merentasi Kalimantan, dari Pontianak di barat sehingga Samarinda di timur, yang telah dimulakan tepat satu abad sebelumnya. Acara-acara berkaitan termasuklah satu pameran tentang Kalimantan di Erasmus Huis, pusat kebudayaan Belanda di Jakarta; satu ekspedisi ilmiah berprofil tinggi, yang telah dianjurkan oleh kumpulan media nasional Gramedia, menelusuri (tapak tilas) ekspedisi-ekspedisi Nieuwenhuis; dan penerbitan edisi berbahasa Indonesia[1] karya klasik Nieuwenhuis dalam bahasa Belanda, In Centraal Borneo (1900), yang telah diterbitkan oleh Gramedia di Jakarta dan dikeluarkan pada bulan Julai 1994, sempena Persidangan Antarabangsa DwiTahunan Ketiga Majlis Penyelidikan Borneo di Pontianak, Kalimantan Barat. Halaman berikut telah diterjemahkan dari pendahuluan yang saya tulis untuk buku ini.[2]
