Abstract

The escalating concerns in regard to the climate change such as global warming due to the increase of carbon dioxide in the environment has called for the urgent need for sustainable energy solutions such as solar energy. This study aims to determine the current adoption of Solar Photovoltaic Systems (SPS) in commercial buildings, identifying barriers in the implementation of SPS in commercial buildings and recommending effective strategies in increasing the implementation of SPS in commercial buildings. The study employs the quantitative method using the questionnaire surveys and the data collected are analyzed using SPSS. Findings of the study show that 17 out of 51 commercial buildings in Klang Valley, Malaysia have implemented SPS in the building, which indicates a low level of SPS uptake among commercial buildings. The most significant barrier hinders the implementation of SPS is found to be the high installation cost, while the most effective strategy for increasing the SPS implementation perceived by the respondents is by increasing the level of awareness on solar PV usage.
